Dude you are wrong about one thing - not knowing what projects people work on says more about the software industry's ideas around keeping their proprietary projects secret and not about the field of Information Architects.

I always sign something that limits my ability to communicate about the work I am doing. If I try to communicate about it by publishing over the Web individuals from those companies come after me.

In a way its like asking about famous librarians. We know a couple, like Ranganathan, or Hypatia, said to be the last librarian at Alexandria, But most famed people who worked as librarians were not famous for their work in libraries.

I bet if you scratch you'll find that most Information architects are well known because they write or teach or whatever...
