Arguably, language is the single most important discipline. Without language, there can be no thought, only experience and memory of experience -- trapped in the mind.

bacteria communicate on a molecular level and behave differently in concert than they do as individuals
the same applies to martian bacteria

Reminds me of the lyric from Ask by The Smiths:
"Nature is a language, can't you read?"
I'd never heard it before but a friend of mine brought it up in response to similar point about language.
