And... there's a huge difference between hearing and listening - hearing is just scratching the surface, where listening allows you to uncover and further understand real needs, motivations and goals.

Very True.
Doing successful creative work is as much about being a good listener as it is about being a good thinker.
Here 'Success' is very relative term. It goes well if the creative (deliverable) user dependent.
