As a writer turned designer, I often find myself explaining to people why I think writing and designing involve the same set of creative problem-solving skills. Here's a great example of designing for effective communication within constraints: the best headlines of 2005, as chosen by the professional headline writers of the American Copy Editors Society. Note the linebreaks showing just how much space the winners had to work with.
