Comics legend Will Eisner has died. If you're looking for a role model, you could scarcely do better than Eisner -- he took a disposable medium and invested it with unprecedented depth and sophistication, he was not only a master craftsman but also his field's finest theoretician, he energetically insisted that comics should be taken seriously as an art form years before anyone else took up the cause, he singlehandedly invented the concept of the long-form stand-alone comics work and gave it the name "graphic novel", he embraced the continuing evolution of the form throughout a career spanning 70 years, he continued to push the boundaries of the medium all the way up to his death, and he did all of it in the face of innumerable naysayers and industry trends working against him.
