American Splendor

This movie -- with its mix of documentary interview footage, biopic-style dramatic re-enactments, and the occasional bit of animation -- could have gone wrong in more ways than I care to contemplate. Instead, somehow, it totally works. That it tells an interesting story and features some terrific performances (thnaks to the brilliant casting of Paul Giamatti and Hope Davis in the leads) is just an added bonus.

You've got to admire the enthusiasm of Cabin Fever director Eli Roth for his subject matter. In this Salon interview he rails against the current crop of what he calls "fucking bullshit pussy-ass fucking suck-ass neutered-down castrated horror films".

Interpol: Turn on the Bright Lights

If you want to make sure I go to great lengths to avoid a record, you'd be hard pressed to find a better way than saying "They sound just like Joy Division." So here we are a year or so later, and curiosity finally got the better of me. As it turns out, this is a fine record indeed. Either Joy Division were both harder-rocking and more melodic than I remember, or all those people comparing this band to that one are totally wrong.
