The Animatrix

This collection of nine animated shorts set in the world of "The Matrix" is technically stunning throughout; the stories, however, vary widely. Best of the lot are pretty much polar opposites: "The Second Renaissance" is a grim, sweeping recounting of the future history leading up to the first film that also happens to be a scathing anti-war statement; "Beyond" is a small, sweetly lyrical story of a group of kids who discover a glitch in the Matrix that doesn't have a violent moment in it. The range of subject matter in the films demonstrates the flexibility of the Matrix concept -- you could do almost any kind of story and make it fit the overall story. It left me wanting to see more, which is as high a recommendation as I can think of.
